1. The pre-departure checklist
- Levels: engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, windshield washer fluid
- Tyres: cold pressure and wear, spare tire if you have one
- Brakes: no suspicious noises? Normal stopping distances?
- Lighting: check all lights (low beam, parking lights, reversing lights, hazard lights, fog lights, headlights, indicators, brake lights, license plate lights).
- Windshield wipers and air conditioning: for a clean windshield and a fresh interior.
2. Load wisely
A poorly loaded car can become unstable or dangerous.
- Avoid overloading the roof. A high, heavy load can affect the vehicle's handling, especially on long, high-speed journeys.
- Place heavy objects at the bottom of the trunk.
- Secure objects in the passenger compartment to prevent them becoming dangerous projectiles in the event of sudden braking.
- If you're using a bike rack, check that the plate and lights remain visible.
đź’ˇA balanced load reduces fuel consumption!
3. Adopt a calm driving style
- Plan your journey to include regular breaks every two hours. Hydrate and stretch.
- Avoid driving during the hottest hours to prevent fatigue.
- Keep a safe distance. Watch out for motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians.
- Cut out all distractions to concentrate fully on the road, even in traffic jams.
4. What about the unexpected?
Vacations can be full of surprises. To avoid them turning sour:
- Keep an emergency kit in the boot: lamp, jumper cable, warning triangle, safety vest, water bottle, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher (not compulsory), repair kit, spare wheel.
- Keep all your documents up to date. The documents you should always have with you are the registration certificate (carte grise), the certificate of conformity, the insurance card, the tax sticker and the roadworthiness certificate. A sticker may be required for driving in some countries.
- Make a note of useful numbers (roadside assistance, your leasing company's driver service).
